WHAT MAKES A HEAT PROTECTANT GOOD?
Before asking Jamie which heat protectant she prefers, we had to ask what it is that makes a heat protectant a necessity in our hair regime. It’s no secret that the word “heat protectant” gets thrown around A LOT. In fact, most of the time we just assume our products all contain heat protectant, but that’s not actually true. We also quickly learned that not all heat protectants are created equal. So, what qualities make a heat protectant good?
A GOOD HEAT PROTECTION SPRAYS WORK LIKE PHYSICAL SUNSCREENS
You know how zinc acts like a barrier between your sun and skin? The silicone in heat protectors do the same thing for your hair. They form a protective barrier over the cuticle of the hair strand, which protects it from the heat of your hair tools.
THEY MOISTURIZE. LIKE, REALLY WELL.
You wouldn’t want to wear a skirt in winter after blasting the heater without smoothing out the reptilian scales situation on your legs first. Same logic can be applied when considering rocking a blow dry or other high heat style. You're not going to blast the heat and get a great result when your hair is dry to begin with. Basically, heat protectors are like conditioner, but lighter. All the vitamins and fatty acids infused in the spray/lotion give the hair a tall glass of water. Hydration is SO IMPORTANT.

Despite popular belief, oils aren't the devil when it comes to heat prep. Yes, heavy, unrefined coconut oil and the like is too dense and can cause the hair to sizzle when put to hot tongs, but nowadays, hair oil formulas are so refined and light-weight, the benefits of the stuff far outweigh the disadvantages.
